Re: Defense of Human Rights for Ramiro “Ramsey” Muñiz

 Dear President Barack Obama:

After your tour of Maison Des Esclaves you stated “…We have to remain vigilant when it comes to the defense of people’s human rights -- because I’m a firm believer that humanity is fundamentally good, but it’s only good when good people stand up for what’s right. “ (Remarks by President Obama After Tour of Maison Des Esclaves, 2013, http://www.whitehouse.gov/the-press-office/2013/06/27/remarks-president-obama-after-tour-maison-des-esclaves). We agree with your position on human rights.

The National Committee to Free Ramsey Muñiz seeks human rights for Ramiro “Ramsey” Muñiz, an American citizen who has been unjustly imprisoned for nearly twenty years. He was a distinguished football star and scholar. He was awarded a full scholarship to Baylor University where he served as an officer of the Fellowship Christian Athletes.  Ramsey Muñiz received a Bachelor of Arts and Science Degree in Political Science, and a Juris Doctorate Degree from Baylor School of Law. He was a successful attorney who later became one of the first Mexican Americans/Hispanics to run for Governor of Texas.

In his 1994 conviction, Ramsey Muñiz was pursued without cause, tried by an all white jury, and sentenced to life without parole. Information that would have exonerated him was withheld, which was in violation of his constitutional, civil, and human rights. For these reasons, we continue to demand justice and freedom.

We have corresponded with you about the case of Ramsey Muñiz. His life was unlawfully and unjustly taken, and he has suffered greatly for many years of his life. Family members and supporters have suffered throughout years of separation, and they stand by him today.

When you speak of human rights, we ask, “What about the case of Ramsey Muñiz?” Human rights are intended for people of all colors, and this includes Hispanics, Latinos and
Mexican-American citizens in the United States.

Ramsey Muñiz has been wrongfully incarcerated for many years. National Hispanic and Latino communities throughout the United States seek his immediate release. As a president who believes in defending human rights, we ask for your support in helping to obtain his freedom. To learn more about Ramsey Muñiz, go to www.freeramsey.com.

Letter to Mail in Support of Freedom for Ramsey Muniz

                                                             June 8, 2013

The Honorable Barack Obama
President of the United States
c/o Office of the Pardon Attorney
1425 New York Avenue, N.W. Suite 11000
Washington, D.C. 20530

Dear Mr. President:

We have struggled for many years to free Ramiro “Ramsey” Muñiz from imprisonment for a 1994 conviction and excessive sentence of life without parole for a non-violent drug offense. Ramsey and his family and friends have endured pain and suffering as a result of nearly 20 years of suffering. He is now turning 70 years of age and we refuse to let him die in prison.

Wrong perceptions, judgment, mistakes, withholding evidence, and Ramsey’s political background contributed to his convictions. He was a community activist during the Civil Rights and Chicano Movements. Ramsey raised the political consciousness in Texas and the Southwest. He enabled many to gain a political voice and seek public office at local, state, and national levels. He incurred legal problems as a result of this activism.

All appeals have been exhausted as the law did not work in our favor. We now seek your assistance and we ask that you grant Ramsey Muñiz a Commutation of Sentence on humanitarian grounds.

We believe in your leadership and we ask that you help free Ramsey Muñiz so that he can be reunited with his family once again. To learn more about him, go to www.freeramsey.com.

                                                                Very truly yours,

December 28, 2012

Dear Mr. President:

We have struggled for many years to free Ramiro " Ramsey " Muñiz from imprisonment for a 1994 conviction and excessive sentence of life without parole for a non-violent drug offense.  As Ramsey pointed out in an interview, he has never ever carried a weapon in his entire life.  He and his family and friends have endured pain and suffering as a result of his many years of incarceration.  He has turned 70 years of age on 13 December, 2012, and suffers from a number of health problems. We refuse to let him die in prison.

I first met Ramsey in 1972, when he was La Raza Unida Party's Governor of Texas.  He was a community activist during the Civil Rights and Chicano Movements.  He did much to raise "political consciousness" in Texas and the Southwest. He enabled many to gain a political voice and seek public office at local, state, and national levels.  Many of today's Latino politicians got their start in La Raza Unida during the party's heyday from 1970 to 1978.  Others - the " Legacy Children," including Julian and Joaquin Castro of San Antonio -- were too young to be active in politics but attended La Raza Unida meetings with their parents.  All of these owe a debt to Ramsey Muñiz.

Ramsey incurred legal problems as a result of his activism.  Wrong perceptions, judgment, mistakes, withholding evidence, and Ramsey's political background contributed to his convictions.  Every time he went on trial, La Raza Unida was tried along with him even though the party has been legally dead for decades.

We have fought this case for many years, and all appeals have been exhausted as the law did not work in our favor. We now seek your assistance and we ask that you grant Ramsey Muñiz a Commutation of Sentence on humanitarian grounds.

We believe in your leadership and we ask that you help free an innocent man so that he can be reunited with his loving family once again.  To learn about Ramsey Muñiz, go to www.freeramsey.com.

Having voted for you in 2008 and again 2012, you are in my thoughts and prayers as you begin your second term.

In Peace and Solidarity,
Pastor Dr. R.L. Uzzel
